One fear associated with dating is the awkward pause. I once had the good fortune of dating a girl I had admired for years. Our first date was fabulous; the conversation was easy and fun. For the second date, I invited her to coffee and a movie. Suddenly, sitting there in the coffee shop, I'd run out of things to talk about. My mind went blank! I had nothing to say, and neither did she. The long-sought relationship ended pretty quickly.
An awkward silence can turn an enjoyable date into a miserable experience. So how do you avoid this dreaded dating scenario? Here are a few tips.
Stay up on current events. There is always something interesting going on in the world. Get into the habit of reading a newspaper, listening to radio news, or perusing a news magazine. This doesn't mean that you need to discuss the US Congress or global warming. Newspapers also include plenty of "human interest" stories, interesting discoveries, etc.
Know some jokes. Everybody appreciates a good joke. Practice telling a few good jokes so you'll always prepared for a lull. Of course, keep it clean and avoid touchy subjects like race and religion.
Look to your surroundings. Unless you are dating inside a shoebox, your environment will probably offer lots to talk about. Talk about statues in the park, paintings in a café, or interesting architecture on the street. And of course, people-watching can always provide fodder for conversation. One fun game is to make up a script for another couple that you can see but not hear.
Have questions prepared. It's a good idea to keep emergency questions on hand. These could be basic, such as, "What are your plans for the future?" or "Tell me about your hometown." You also might have a few offbeat questions up your sleeve, like "If money weren't a concern, how would you spend your life?" Be prepared to answer these questions, too!
Also keep in mind that silence doesn't have to be horrible. When two people are comfortable together, silence can be special. You might even say something to this effect. Something like "I enjoy just being by your side" can melt someone's heart and keep boredom at bay.
By doing a little preparation beforehand, you'll help avoid that dreaded silence and will be well on your way to a positive and memorable date.
