Online Dating Etiquette - Some Dos and Don'ts

Online dating is catching up so fact; it can make your head spin with the number of people signing up on online dating sites. Online dating gives you the anonymity that nothing else can. You can be sitting at work or at a coffee shop and chatting away with your love interest or you could be sitting at home
, in front of the TV catching up on your favorite show or sporting match and chatting or emailing the person you would like to know better.

Where online dating is concerned you are not judged by what you wear, but by what you say. Not only is good communication skill appreciated, the right amount of etiquette is required too. Trust needs to be built for online dating and this can be done by showing respect and etiquette.

Here are some tips on etiquette do's and don't's

- Do not interrogate asking questions is natural when you are getting to know some one on an online dating site. Just make sure you do not make your questioning sound like an interrogation. You do not want to intimidate the person who is responding. Let the questions flow naturally. With every new email you get you will feel like asking questions based on the tone and topic of the email. Do not shoot off random questions or make your email sound like a questionnaire. Also remember to give responses about yourself when the other person is asking the questions. It seems rude to not volunteer information but expect information in return.

- Do listen one of the first things a person notices in a person is their listening skills. If you are a good listener chances are the other person will think you are truly interested in them.

- Do not discuss politics and religion some topics are best left alone till you get to know the person better. Topics like religion and political views are personal and sensitive in nature. Some people are sensitive about religion where as some are passionate about politics. Who wants to get into a fall out because of a political view? Steer clear of these topics till you get to know the person on a more personal level.

- Do not type in capital letters typing an email in capital letters or chatting in capital letters signifies shouting. You do not want to give the person the impression that you are shouting at them. Another thing to avoid is abbreviations as too many of them give the impression that you are too busy and preoccupied to type out the whole word and sometimes abbreviations are difficult to understand. Take care of spellings and grammar as well, some people are particular about this and it can give a bad impression if there are too many spelling and grammatical errors.

- Do give a person their space respect people's space and time. If a person is not comfortable meeting you for a real date then do not push it and force the person. This could just put the person off and make them suspicious about your intentions. Some people prefer taking things slow, where as others do not mind taking things forward at a faster pace. Respect the individual's decision.

- Do communicate in a mutually acceptable manner some people are comfortable getting to know another person through emails where as some people prefer chatting and there are others who do not mind giving their phone number so they can talk on the telephone. Communicate with the person in a manner in which they are comfortable. Do not force them to give their phone numbers if they are not ready to.

- Do not put up an online dating profile if you are already dating someone this is a serious issue. Some men and women sign up on online dating sites just for fun even when they are in a serious relationship. This is not fair to those people who are putting themselves out there to find their perfect match or true love. They do not deserve to be deceived.

- Do correspond with more than one person it is acceptable to communicate with more than one person if you haven't found someone who you would like to date on a regular basis in the real world. It is perfectly acceptable to email two or three people at the same time. It does not mean you are cheating on anyone.

Remember that the online dating world is a large confusing one, using these simple etiquette do's and don'ts will help you find love in the virtual world.
